Lakeland Country Fair, Torver, near Coniston

The Lakeland Country Fair takes place at Torver, on Sunday 18th August, near Coniston, in beautiful countryside looking across to the Coniston fells and Coniston Old Man. It is easily accessible, at  Little Arrow, Torver, on the A593, a few miles west of Coniston village.

As well as being a typical Cumbrian show, the Lakeland Country Fair acts as a showcase for traditional Cumbrian skills and activities.  There will be Herdwick sheep on display and demonstrationsof hand-clipping will take place during the afternoon.

We are delighted to announce that this year's Main Ring feature will be a display by Silverband Falconry.  They will have a stand during the afternoon at which visitors to the show can see birds of prey close up and talk to their very knowledgeable staff.  In addition they will put on a flying display mid-afternoon.

Features include a Terrier Show followed by Terrier Racing, a Lurcher and Whippet Show,  a family Dog Show, Childrens' Sports, a Stick Show, a Foxhound Show, and a Horn-blowing competition!  There will be Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling, as well as Fell Racefor adults and juniors.

Many traditional skills will be on show; these will  include stickmaking, glass painting, chair-caning, leatherwork, swill basket making, weaving, felting, spinning, leatherwork, cookery and sheep clipping. There will also be a number of Displays;  These will include a display of Fell Ponies for people to learn about this ancient native Cumbrian breed.  There will also be a display of fell foxhounds and beagles, and the children will be invited into the ring to meet them and give them a stroke. A feature of the show will be teams from the local Young Farmers taking part in a Tug-of-War.

The Lakeland Country Fair offers something for all the family - as well as numerous Trade Stands there is a childrens' area with bouncy castle, roundabout and other sideshows. There will also be Donkey Rides for the children.  In addition, Darren Morgan of "Independent Adventure" will, we hope, be running Have-a-Go Archery. There is a licensed bar, home-made refreshments and a barbecue.

We are keeping our low admission price as we want to encourage as many people as possible to come and enjoy the show.  Car parking is free, so this is an opportunity for an inexpensive day out to see a cross-section of Cumbrian life!
